ACCEPTING FEB 28TH, UNTIL MARCH 14TH:

Woof Woof! Calling all Summerside residents and their four-legged friends! We’re so excited to bring back our Pooch Patrol Program this year!

Our Lake Summerside Pooch Patrol Program is designed as a bird control strategy to help decrease the presence of those winged pests that call our lakeside beach, home – like geese and gulls. The program presents a live and active predator, and the idea is that the more that birds see a predator around, the less likely they are to want to return.

This program will rely on resident volunteers and gives them the ability to bring their dogs to the Beach Club and enjoy some private time along the beach line and shallow water areas on the Beach Club side and the field space at Entry Park. Dogs and their owners will be provided a reflective patrol jacket to be easily identified during patrol times. They must be worn for the entirety of the time slot. A maximum of 1 household and 2 dogs are allowed on the property during each shift.

This program is organized in a controlled manner ensuring the safety of residents and their dogs by taking place outside of park operating hours. Scientific studies have shown that as few as 30 seagulls can degrade water quality with droppings that contain swimmer’s itch and pathogens that cause human sicknesses such as parasites, salmonella, and bacteria. Our goal with this program will be to discourage nuisance birds, not to remove them. The pros of decreasing birds significantly outweigh any concerns about dogs around the beach or in the shallow parts of the water, as long as dog entry is limited and controlled. It is the responsibility of the volunteer to take care of any damage and/or cleanup during the program.
