The Basic Kayak Safety Skills course is designed to teach rec/touring paddlers basic solo and self-assisted deep water rescues.

The aim of this program is to introduce participants to the basics of recreational kayaking. This includes an overview of gear, basic paddling techniques, weather considerations, safety and rescue amongst other things. It is all performed in safe and enjoyable environment with certified/professional instructors.

The aim of this program is to introduce participants to the basics of recreational kayaking in both a flatwater and slow-moving water environment. Our instructors will introduce, demonstrate, and help the paddlers practice basic paddling techniques, rescue and safety concepts, location options (for after the course), talk about gear, and much more.

Age Requirement: 16 Years +
LEVEL 1 - Learn - Introduction to Stand Up Paddleboarding. Recommended for people new to SUP and those who have never taken formal lessons. Learn essential paddling skills, safety skills and knowledge to get the most out of your time on a stand up paddleboard. We cover everything from how to hold a paddle to what to do if you fall off. Progress from kneeling to standing at your own pace while you learn the essential paddling strokes necessary to paddle in a straight line, turn, and stop. Finish the day with a smile and the confidence to safely hit the water on your own after the lesson. All paddling and safety equipment is included.
Come dressed in moisture wicking, quick drying clothes (merino wool and polyester work well, cotton does not). Paddling footwear recommended. Awards Paddle Canada “Basic SUP Skills” certification. Maximum 6 students.

LEVEL 2 - Master - Requires SUP Level 1 (or proof of Paddle Canada Basic SUP certification)
This is where the fun really begins. Builds on the knowledge and skills gained in Level 1 and adds stances, movement on the board, and more advanced paddle strokes. Recommended for those who wish to paddle longer distances, in rougher conditions or just want to show off. Learn about rescues and towing another SUP as well. Successful completion awards Paddle Canada “Advanced Flatwater SUP Skills” certification, which (after some practice) allows students to pursue additional training in whitewater, ocean touring and surfing skills courses.
All paddling and safety equipment is included. Come dressed in moisture-wicking, quick-drying clothes (merino wool and polyester work well, cotton does not). Paddling footwear recommended. Maximum 6 students.
